Whether you're preparing for a formal occasion such as a gala, prom, birthday party or wedding, you might worry about what type of dress you will wear. And the next thing that comes to mind is: “Should I get a customized dress or just buy a ready-made one?” It’s a simple query but it can be easily overwhelming.
Between time and money, the correct option should be the bang for your buck. In these types of situations, ready-made gowns may be the quicker and simpler choice because of no appointments, no fittings, and shorter waiting times.
But what if we told you that getting a bespoke designer to create a stunning gown made uniquely for you is better, one-of-a-kind, and worth your every penny?
Bespoke Vs Ready To Wear Gown
What does ready-to-wear gowns mean?
Ready-to-wear clothes and bespoke gowns are two of the most well-known choices for special formal occasions.
Off-the-rack gowns or prêt-à-porter in French are manufactured without a specific client in mind. They are usually replicated in different sizes for accessibility and availability. It also allows the designer to make their own designs without the client’s input.
What does a bespoke gown mean?
Meanwhile, bespoke dresses need specific measurements and are made for a particular customer. The client also has a say on the vision and requirements for the style and design of their gown. Another term for bespoke is couture, which originated from the French word that refers to bespoke wear. Aside from gowns, bespoke clothes also include high-end dresses, aseobis, suits, jumpsuits, and evening-wear, among others.
Here are some pros and cons of RTW and Bespoke Gown:
Pros of RTW
1. Convenience
RTW gowns are easy to purchase, and they get delivered on time after ordering them online. Some gowns sold online have sizes readily available by providing size charts.
2. Budget-Friendly
RTW dresses are usually more cost-effective than customized gowns. You can also get quality-made and designer RTW gowns without breaking the bank. Some brick-and-mortar dress shops even offer dresses on sale.
3. Multiple Options
When purchasing off-the-rack gowns, whether online or in retail stores, you can choose different colors, styles and sizes. It is also pretty easy to just choose which dress may be close to the client’s taste.
Cons of choosing RTW
1. Easily replicated
Much like fast fashion, some off-the-rack dresses could have common designs, and a personal style cannot be achieved.
2. Fitting problems
Some dresses don’t have standard sizing and measurements, especially when buying online; it could cost you more to alter the ready-made dress. Without personalized measurements, off-the-rack dresses could miss the best features of your body, which could look dull and lifeless.
3. Environmental factors
Ready-to-wear dresses and clothes can be easily bought, but can also reach the landfill once the customer outgrows the design or the fit. It helps drive the fast fashion phenomenon, which is a 1990s term used to describe cheap and low quality garments that are quickly produced and cycled in the market to keep up with new trends.
This practice is an increasing threat to the environment. Projections from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change showed that greenhouse gas emissions from textiles production could grow by 60% by 2030.
Pros of Bespoke
1. Perfect measurements
A dress or gown tailor-made for you will be the right fit because of accurate and standard measurements. It will also flatter your best features because it is made based on your measurements. With the right fit, the dress will surely increase your confidence.
2. Design control and freedom
Having a stylist work on your couture gown allows you to provide your own style and design. You also have the freedom to add your own vision on every element of the process from fabric to style.
This is a pretty common trend from influencers and stylists who feature their tailor-made dresses or gowns on social media for all their curious followers to see.
3. Distinct
Since everything is original and the style is created for you, the customized dress will be different from other off-the-rack gowns. You and your dress will also turn heads during your event.
4. High Quality and handmade
Bespoke dresses are handmade, and they usually have intricate and fine details. Tailor-made dresses are also made from high-quality materials and fabrics, so expect that they can last for a long time.
5. Sustainable
While the answer to preventing fast fashion is reusing clothes, investing in a bespoke or personalized garment can also help decrease emissions from the fashion industry. Bespoke dresses are made for a specific person, compared to off-the-rack or ready-made dresses that are multiple products, but only a few people or one person will buy and wear.
Bespoke dresses can also attract consumers who prefer sustainable products. In fact, a 2025 study by advisory firm Globe Scan showed that almost half of Americans said they purchased eco-friendly products.
Cons of Bespoke
1. Expensive
Expect that a labor-intensive and high-quality dress may have higher costs. Some may offer different price points, but tailor-made dresses require quality materials, which is why the price cannot be negotiated. For those in a hurry, some tailors may charge higher prices due to a rush job.
2. Longer preparation or waiting time
One of the disadvantages of getting a customized dress is that it might take longer to receive your item. Planning, measurements, and unique styling are needed to create the dress of your dreams.
3. Miscommunication issues
Communication between clients and tailors might not work out, and as a result, the vision and style are misunderstood. It’s important to declare final decisions and provide clear instructions to ensure an accurate and stunning dress that is best for you.
While there are challenges in choosing bespoke gowns or dresses, choosing the right designer or brand will do more good than bad. One example of a trusted bespoke clothing brand is Philadelphia-based Salva Atelier.
Why Choose Salva Atelier?
Located in Philadelphia, Salva Atelier creates bespoke and customized gowns to show the client’s exquisite story and personality. Their couture gowns are not just garments but expressions of art, love, and attention to detail.
Salva Atelier is owned by Quianna-Lee Martin, a creative director and fashion entrepreneur with over 10 years of experience in luxury bridal, ready-to-wear design, and fashion business operations.
Salva Atelier, born in 2019, always believes in this bible quote: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” — Colossians 3:23.
This scripture embodies the heart of Salva Atelier, which reminds them that every stitch, every cut, and every fitted seam is an act of service — a way to honor both their craft and the people they serve.
Salva Atelier creates original cocktail wear, evening wear, bridal gowns, and bridal robes perfect for the night, mood, and movement. These original and heartfelt designs will match the client’s energy and build confidence.
Whether it’s for a wedding, birthday, or prom, Salva Atelier pours their heart and soul into the best personalized design experience.
Here are three reasons why Salva Atelier will be one of the best decisions you will ever make:
1. Wear Salva Atelier’s Gowns to Become the Center of Attention

From the first consultation, Salva Atelier will listen and understand your story, personality, and creativity for your special occasion. They will make sure that designs and templates are not replicated and recycled.
Each dream dress will be timeless, stunning, and classic. Salva Atelier crafts dresses depending on the customer’s desires, such as dresses with lace, soft silks, or modern gowns with bold textures and contemporary silhouettes.
Amid fast fashion culture or mass production, Salva Atelier assures their clients that their creations come from passion for innovation and purpose to improve customer satisfaction by enhancing beauty, comfort and confidence.
They don’t just create showstopping customized gowns but also dresses that help accentuate the best features that will turn clients flawless and confident in their photos and during the most important moments.
2. Gowns Will Highlight Customers’ Distinct Style and Personality
We all know that everyone has different tastes and goals for their events but that doesn’t mean they should limit their desires and choose clothes that do not resonate with them. Resorting to off-the-rack clothes or gowns could limit the vibe and energy that the customer wants for their celebration.
At Salva Atelier, they will ensure that every gown is an extension of the customer’s personality and dreams, not just another recycled fashion idea from an internet sensation.
Every design starts with listening to the customer’s ideas and inspirations. The process will go from stories and textures to fabrics and silhouettes that entail the identity of the client. From there, Salva Atelier will translate those ideas into sketches that will accurately represent your vision while also ensuring the standards of tailoring and precise couture.
With the design direction finished, Salva Atelier will start sourcing materials like fine silks, lace, tulle and other bespoke materials that will supplement and enhance the design plans. Each accessory is carefully selected to improve comfort and movement, ensuring that the client’s gown looks and feels extraordinary.
The designs are one-of-a-kind, and no detail is overlooked. Experience multiple fittings at the Philadelphia-based atelier for customized, comfortable, and unforgettable gowns made for you.
3. Bespoke Steps To Create Gowns Made Just For You
The best thing about wearing a customized gown from Salva Atelier is that it will make you confident, knowing that the gown was sewn exclusively for you and based on your vision.
From the first sketch to the final product, Salva Atelier is committed to bespoke processes that will make every detail celebrate one’s individuality.
What’s more is that Salva Atelier is not like other traditional boutiques. They can create one’s dream bespoke wedding dress in less than 4 months, faster than the average 6 to 8 eight months of waiting time from bridal boutiques and that’s not even tailor-made!
At Salva Atelier, they collaborate directly with clients to bring their vision to life, with prices starting at $1,500 for prom gowns and evening wear and starting at $4,500 for bridal gowns.
Here’s what to expect when you work with Salva Atelier:
